An escalating situation in the Black Sea has prompted Turkey to issue a stern warning to Moscow, urging restraint and caution to prevent further escalations.

The Turkish presidency, through President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office, broke its silence on Thursday regarding a recent incident involving a Turkish-owned cargo vessel attacked by the Russian navy over the past weekend.

The cargo ship, identified as the Sukru Okan and flying the flag of Palau, came under fire from the Russian navy last Sunday.

Following the attack, Russian military personnel boarded the vessel for inspection.

The ship was eventually allowed to continue its journey towards the Ukrainian port of Izmail, a vital route for exporting Ukrainian agricultural products.

The Turkish presidency expressed its concern over the incident and conveyed its message to Russian counterparts in the Federation, emphasizing the need to prevent actions that could further escalate tensions in the already volatile Black Sea region.

This incident is part of a broader context of increased attacks in the Black Sea area, which have surged after Russia’s recent decision to withdraw from a significant Ukrainian grain deal.

The situation highlights the delicate balance and potential for escalation in the region, and Turkey’s proactive stance underscores the importance of diplomatic measures to maintain stability.
