An official spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry reiterated France’s unwavering support, saying, “France continues to back the UN’s special envoy to Yemen in the pursuit of a political resolution to the conflict – the only viable pathway towards a sustainable improvement in Yemeni lives and contributing to regional security.”
France has warmly welcomed the triumphant operation of extracting oil from the decaying tanker, “Safer”, located off the strategic Yemeni port of Al-Hudaydah in the Red Sea, alleviating imminent threats of a catastrophic leak.
The spokesperson stated, France, having supported and contributed €3.3 million towards this operation, commends the United Nations’ relentless efforts and the international coalition’s mobilization to bring this complex rescue plan to fruition on August 11. This timely intervention has prevented a potentially devastating environmental, humanitarian, and economic crisis in the Red Sea.
The extraction procedure, which began in late July as per UN sources, was initiated to remove over a million barrels of oil from the “Safer” tanker anchored off war-torn Yemen’s shores. The looming oil spill threatened to wreak monumental damage on the Red Sea’s delicate ecosystems, critical marine life habitats, and entire communities that rely on fishing for their livelihoods.
Moreover, such a disaster would have significantly disrupted international marine navigation between the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Suez Canal leading to the Mediterranean Sea.
With the successful conclusion of the extraction, the question now arises regarding the ownership of this oil amidst the ongoing conflict between the Houthi rebels and the recognized government. This concern emerges even as confrontations between the two sides appear to be diminishing.
The success of this operation not only emphasizes the significance of international cooperation but also underscores the delicate balance between geopolitical issues and environmental concerns in today’s globalized world.
