Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, is set to arrive in Cairo on Saturday in response to an official invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Abbas will attend a meeting of the Secretaries-General of the Palestinian factions scheduled for Sunday morning.
Diab Al-Louh, the Ambassador of Palestine to Egypt, announced that Abbas would hold a special session with President Sisi to discuss the latest developments on the Palestinian front. They will focus on the efforts to drive the peace process forward, terminate Israeli occupation, and continue Egypt’s significant endeavours towards achieving national reconciliation.
Abbas is also expected to open a meeting of the Secretaries-General of the Palestinian factions on Sunday. They will discuss Palestinian developments, strategies for restoring national unity, and ending division amidst escalating Israeli aggression in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.
Abbas Kamel, the Head of Egyptian Intelligence, previously met a delegation from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) led by Jamil Mezher, Deputy Secretary-General, last Saturday evening. The meeting revolved around the requirements for the success of the Secretaries-General meeting of the factions, and the importance of ending divisions and restoring Palestinian national unity.
Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, confirmed the movement’s participation in the Cairo meeting. He stressed the need for clear outcomes to confront Israeli practices and unify the Palestinian ranks.
Egypt has extended invitations to Palestinian factions to attend the meeting of the Secretaries-General of the factions in Cairo later this month to discuss Israeli assaults in the West Bank.
