As European Union leaders convene in Brussels, discussions are centered on migration and deportation policies within the bloc.

Recent actions by EU member states, including Poland’s suspension of asylum rights for migrants via Belarus and Germany’s decision to shut its borders following a violent incident allegedly involving a migrant, have heightened focus on the issue.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni have all highlighted stricter immigration policies, while France’s new Prime Minister Michel Barnier has called for revising EU deportation rules to expedite expulsions.

Italy has also begun operating detention centers in Albania.

Alongside these heated discussions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Brussels to present his “victory plan” to EU leaders, reiterating the five key points he previously shared with Ukraine’s parliament.

With migration and the war in Ukraine both at the forefront, EU leaders are navigating critical issues affecting the bloc.
