On Monday, the Governor of North Darfur in Western Sudan, Nimir Abdel Rahman, revealed that the United Nations (UN) humanitarian relief officials approved to facilitate the transit of aid supplies from Chad to Darfur to support those distressed by the ongoing hostilities.

In a statement, the North Darfur Governor said that both Martin Griffiths, the UN’s Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator, and the Sudanese Government have displayed their preparedness to enable the transportation of humanitarian assistance via Chad’s airports to the Darfur region.

He added that aid will be channeled from the Um Jaras airport to Northern and Southern Darfur, while supplies from the ‘Abéché’ airport will be directed to Western and Central Darfur.

This initiative is viewed as the inaugural accomplishment of the N’Djamena dialogues among Darfur’s constituents, which revolved around orchestrating humanitarian operations and leveraging Chadian airports for this purpose.

The governor lauded Chad’s supportive stance, expressing hope that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and all other relief-centric organizations will take advantage of this development to further assist those impacted in Darfur.
