The Pentagon is exploring options to increase military presence and equipment in the Middle East in response to the assassination of Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah by Israeli forces, according to U.S. officials.

The plans, revealed by NBC News, include proposals presented to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for enhanced military support in the region.

During discussions with President Joe Biden and other national security leaders, Austin reviewed the current military situation and potential strategies. While no definitive decisions were made during these discussions with the White House, Austin retains the authority to deploy forces as needed.

Currently, the U.S. maintains approximately 40,000 troops in the Middle East, a number that exceeds the troop count when Iran last responded to Israeli actions in April.

Officials assert confidence in the Pentagon’s current position but acknowledge possible extensions of current deployments or adjustments in air defense and other capabilities due to potential retaliation from Iran or Hezbollah.

On Saturday, the White House reported that President Biden conducted a phone call with Vice President Kamala Harris and the national security team to receive updates on the Middle East situation.

They reviewed the status of U.S. military units in the region and ongoing diplomatic efforts with allies and partners.

Evacuation scenarios remain under consideration, with U.S. forces and assets ready to assist civilian departures if necessary.

However, U.S. officials noted that airports remain operational and there is currently no significant demand from Americans for evacuation assistance.

While plans are in place and readiness is assured, no evacuation orders have been issued yet, but this could change rapidly if the situation deteriorates.

The report also hinted at the possibility of reassigning the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman from Europe to the Middle East, although no indications of such a move have emerged so far.

The carrier is scheduled to reach the European side within about a week but could be redirected swiftly to U.S. Central Command if required.

Furthermore, the Pentagon announced on Saturday that Austin assured his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant of the U.S.’s commitment to prevent Iran and its proxies from exploiting the situation in Lebanon or expanding the conflict.

Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder stated that Austin reaffirmed full U.S. support for Israel’s right to self-defense and emphasized the readiness to protect U.S. forces and facilities in the region, as well as the commitment to defend Israel.
