France’s new Prime Minister Michel Barnier has proposed a 38-member cabinet to President Emmanuel Macron, potentially ending months of political uncertainty following early legislative elections.
Among the key appointees is Rachida Dati, of Moroccan-Algerian descent, proposed as Minister of Culture, according to BFM TV.
Barnier’s proposal includes members from Macron’s party, the center-right, and other centrist parties.
He emphasised the government’s priorities, such as improving purchasing power, securing public safety, managing immigration, and better financial management. The new cabinet will require Macron’s approval, with final details expected before Sunday.
Key appointments in Barnier’s new cabinet, include Rachida Dati, of Moroccan-Algerian descent, as Minister of Culture, according to reports. Other proposed ministers include François Bouvet as Minister for Overseas Territories, Anny Genevard for Agriculture, and Patrick Hetzel for Higher Education. Sébastien Lecornu will retain his position as Minister of Defence, while 33-year-old Antoine Armo is set to take on a major role in the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
If approved, Barnier’s policy outline will be presented on October 1. However, some of Macron’s allies have expressed concerns about the potential dominance of right-wing figures in the new government.
