Hany Salah Mustafa, the Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan, has revealed the latest statistics on the influx of Sudanese refugees into Egypt since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023.
According to Sudan’s “Al-Taghyeer” newspaper, Mustafa reported that the number of Sudanese nationals fleeing to Egypt has reached 1.2 million.
He highlighted that the Egyptian mission continues to provide visa services to Sudanese citizens, following direct instructions from Egypt’s political leadership.
The ambassador emphasized that the significant refugee flow underscores the dire situation faced by the Sudanese people and reflects Egypt’s commitment to providing assistance and support during these critical times.
Mustafa stressed that Egypt remains actively engaged in all initiatives related to Sudan, demonstrating Egypt’s dedication to Sudan’s stability and support for its people during these challenging times.
“These efforts are part of the historic relations between the two countries and Egypt’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation,” Mustafa added.
Furthermore, the Egyptian Cabinet has approved an extension for an additional year to regularize the status of foreigners residing illegally in Egypt, including a vast number of Sudanese, alongside Syrians, Yemenis, and other nationalities, under the regulations outlined in Prime Ministerial Decree No. 3326 of 2023.
In late August, a group of Sudanese officials held a meeting to consider new health requirements for Egyptians hosting Sudanese fleeing the ongoing conflict.
The meeting, chaired by the acting Sudanese Minister of Health, Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim Awadallah, discussed arrangements to meet the new health prerequisites for obtaining an Egyptian visa, including mandatory polio vaccinations for all visa applicants, regardless of age.
The meeting was attended by directors from various technical departments, including emergency health, epidemic control, basic health care, the National Medical Commission, administrative and financial affairs, along with executives from other relevant departments like international health regulations and the expanded immunization program.
