Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday during the European House-Ambrosetti Forum at Lake Como. Meloni emphasized Italy’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion.
Following the 40-minute meeting, Meloni told reporters that the discussion went well, stressing that abandoning Ukraine is not an option for Italy. She warned that if international law is disregarded, global chaos will escalate. Meloni also noted that she had shared this stance with Chinese officials.
A statement from her office highlighted that the leaders discussed Ukraine’s pressing needs ahead of winter, amid ongoing Russian attacks. Italy reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s legitimate defense and the pursuit of a just and lasting peace, with support being a top priority during Italy’s G7 Presidency.
Meloni and Zelensky also addressed reconstruction efforts, with the next Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled to be held in Italy in 2025. Italy has supported Ukraine since the invasion, while maintaining that military aid should not extend beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Zelensky expressed gratitude on Telegram, thanking Meloni and the Italian people for their steadfast support and joint efforts for peace.
