At least 17 students lost their lives in a tragic fire that broke out in a dormitory at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Kenya’s Nyeri county. Police warned that the death toll could rise, with at least 13 students suffering serious burns.
The fire, which occurred Thursday night, is under investigation. Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu confirmed that the dormitory housed over 150 boys, aged 10 to 14. The fire spread rapidly due to the wooden construction of the building.
The school, located 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Nairobi in Kenya’s central highlands, has 824 students. President William Ruto has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
