The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has announced significant progress in ongoing talks aimed at resolving the crisis surrounding the Libyan Central Bank.
The discussions, held separately with representatives from the House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Libyan Presidential Council, have led to substantial breakthroughs.
According to a statement released by UNSMIL on the “X” platform, the talks took place at the mission’s headquarters in Tripoli.
The separate discussions involved candid dialogues and stretched from morning until late Monday night on September 2.
“Participants have reached important understandings on how to resolve the crisis surrounding the central bank, restore the confidence of Libyans and international partners in this vital institution,” the statement read.
The talks concluded with both the House of Representatives and the High Council of State agreeing to elevate their consensus to their respective councils for further consultation.
The consultations are set to continue tomorrow to finalize and sign the agreement.
Last week, UNSMIL urged the suspension of all unilateral decisions related to the Libyan Central Bank and called for an immediate lifting of force majeure on oil fields.
The mission emphasized the importance of refraining from using Libya’s primary income source—oil—in political conflicts, ensuring the safety of central bank employees, and protecting them from arbitrary arrest and threats.
The UNSMIL statement highlighted that resolving this emerging crisis is crucial for setting the stage for a comprehensive political process.
This process, supervised by the United Nations and supported by the international community, aims to guide Libya back to national elections. This includes agreeing on a unified government to end the legitimacy crisis and division of institutions.
Libya continues to face a growing crisis in its banking and economic sectors, triggered by ongoing conflicts over the management of the Libyan Central Bank.
