The opening of a Chinese-funded airport in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has been delayed following a security review triggered by recent militant attacks in the region. Over 70 people were killed in coordinated attacks by separatist militants, who have been targeting government forces and projects linked to the $65 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The Gwadar airport, a $200 million joint venture between Pakistan, Oman, and China, was nearing completion and was set to handle both domestic and international flights. Initially, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was scheduled to inaugurate the airport on August 14 alongside Chinese officials. However, the event was canceled after an ethnic Baloch rights group staged a protest.

Following last week’s deadly attacks, authorities decided to delay the start of flights as they reassess the security situation. The Chinese government has expressed ongoing concerns about security and is working with Pakistan to ensure the safe continuation of the CPEC projects.
