Heavy floods have struck the southern region of Libya, causing the deaths of three children in the area of Thahalah in the city of Ghat.
The Emergency and Ambulance Operations Room for the southern region confirmed the fatalities and reported ongoing efforts to evacuate children and the elderly from the affected area amidst continued communication blackouts.
Libya’s Interior Minister, Issam Abu Zaid, has directed security officials from Sebha, Al-Shat, and Abar, as well as central support branches in the southern region, to deploy four-wheel-drive vehicles to Ghat, specifically to the Thahalah area, to provide emergency assistance.
According to the Space Sciences Foundation “Roya,” rainwater and floods have inundated the Thahalah area, forcing residents to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in the streets.
The foundation also noted that communication lines remain cut, complicating rescue operations.
Libya has been grappling with infrastructure challenges and environmental vulnerabilities, which have been exacerbated by recent severe weather events.
