As part of ongoing discussions on the Middle East crisis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today.
Meloni expressed strong hope for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, in line with UN Security Council resolution 2735, at the upcoming negotiations on August 15.
She reiterated Italy’s support for the mediation efforts led by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar.
While acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defence, Meloni emphasised the need for de-escalation at the regional level, including along the Israel-Lebanon border, where Italy plays a key role in the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL.
