More than 5,583 displaced families in Yemen’s Hodeidah and Hajjah governorates have been severely affected by the floods caused by heavy rains between August 6 and 8, resulting from a low-pressure weather system impacting the western coast.

A report issued by the Executive Unit for IDPs, obtained by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), revealed that a total of 2,073 families in Hodeidah were affected by the flooding, spread across 22 camps in the districts of Hays and Al-Khawkhah.

The report also confirmed that four people died in Hays, and 132 homes were destroyed.

In Hajjah, the report noted that 3,510 families were impacted, scattered across 61 settlements in the districts of Midi, Harad, Hayran, and Abs. In Midi district alone, 25 homes were destroyed.

The flooding has also buried large areas of farmland, destroying crops, and dislodged several landmines, carrying them into agricultural areas and populated regions.

The report emphasized that many of the flooded areas are now contaminated with landmines and require comprehensive surveys and complete demining.
