On Tuesday, Libyan National Army General Khalifa Haftar met with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel and his accompanying delegation at Haftar’s office in Benghazi.

The Libyan National Army’s media office reported that Haftar welcomed the visiting delegation and underscored the deep fraternal relations between Libya and Egypt.

In response, Kamel conveyed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s regards to Haftar, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to Libya’s unity and stability.

The discussions focused on the political developments of the ongoing Libyan crisis. Both parties stressed the importance of advancing the political process to facilitate presidential and parliamentary elections.

They also expressed support for the efforts of the United Nations Mission in Libya to create conducive conditions for holding the elections.

Libya has been mired in conflict since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. The country has faced ongoing political instability, factional fighting, and humanitarian crises.

Haftar, a prominent figure in Libyan politics, leads the Libyan National Army, which controls significant parts of the country.

Egypt, under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has been actively involved in supporting stabilization efforts in Libya.

The relationship between Egypt and Libya is crucial given the geographic proximity and shared interests in regional stability and counterterrorism.

The United Nations has been engaged in mediating the Libyan conflict and supporting the transition towards democratic governance through facilitating elections.

The current political landscape remains complex, with various factions vying for control and competing visions for Libya’s future.
