Mauritania’s Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal submitted his resignation to President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani on Monday evening, following the President’s recent inauguration for a second term.
President Ghazouani was sworn in for a five-year term on Sunday. As per Mauritania’s constitutional requirements, the prime minister is obligated to tender the government’s resignation to the President after presidential and legislative elections.
Ould Bilal, who has led the government since 2020, thanked President Ghazouani for his support over the past four years in a statement broadcast by the Mauritanian News Agency.
The resignation is a formal step in the transition process following the President’s re-election.
President Ghazouani, who has been in office since 2019, previously served as Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. He was re-elected in the first round of elections held on June 29 of this year.
