Abdullah Suleiman, the official spokesperson for the government of Kufra in Libya, revealed that approximately 40,000 Sudanese refugees have not received any international food aid since January and February. During this period, Libyan authorities have provided them with food supplies, as reported by “Al Sudani” newspaper.

In a meeting with Bankole Adeoye, the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, held on the sidelines of the sixth session of the African Union’s Coordination Summit in Accra, Ghana, Suleiman discussed the local capabilities of Kufra to support the refugees. He highlighted the commitment made by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations during her visit to Kufra, which included promises of support for various sectors, particularly health.

The Libyan official described the living conditions of Sudanese refugees, who reside in over 50 residential gatherings around the city of Kufra, including farms, warehouses, and old houses. These refugees often line up in long queues at the Kufra immigration center, hoping to receive aid from relief convoys organized by the Libyan army.

In June, the World Health Organization reported that about 15 million Sudanese require urgent and life-saving healthcare due to the extensive damage the Sudanese war has caused to the country’s health system. This has led to a deterioration in the already fragile health conditions of many vulnerable individuals.

Furthermore, Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted that the civilian casualty rate in armed conflicts has risen to 72%. Addressing the situation in Gaza during the opening of the Human Rights Council’s summer session, he stated that Israeli airstrikes have caused significant human suffering and that the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is deteriorating significantly.

Regarding Sudan, Turk emphasized that Sudan is being destroyed in a war between two factions, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, accusing both of committing war crimes. He urged the Sudanese government to investigate these violations and hold the perpetrators accountable.
