The Sudanese army officially denied on Sunday that it had launched any air raid on Saturday in the city of Omdurman in the capital, Khartoum, which resulted in civilian casualties.
The General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces stated that the air force did not engage with any hostile targets in Omdurman yesterday.
They added that the Rapid Support Forces were the ones to accuse the Armed Forces of these charges within the context of media manipulation and continuous lies propagated by the insurgent militia in an attempt to cover up their ongoing violations and crimes against civilians.
“We have clarified more than once that the militia habitually bombs residential areas with artillery and rockets concurrently with our aircraft flights, falsely and maliciously attributing the targeting of citizens to the Armed Forces,” they continued.
The Sudanese Armed Forces’ Facebook page stated on Saturday that the Special Operations Forces carried out a quality operation in the city of Omdurman against the Rapid Support Forces. The page did not mention anything about air force involvement in the operation.
Omdurman witnessed severe clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in the past few hours amid news of the army’s progress in the city.
The Khartoum State Ministry of Health mentioned that no fewer than 22 individuals lost their lives, and dozens were injured in an air strike allegedly carried out by the army in the city of Omdurman.
Later, United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, condemned the killing of civilians in Omdurman. A spokesperson for the United Nations said Guterres expressed his regret for the reported death of more than 20 civilians due to an airstrike in Omdurman.
He condemned the killing of civilians due to violence in the Darfur region and expressed his concern about the resurgence of fighting in the states of North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile.
He noted a complete disregard for humanitarian law and human rights in a serious and disturbing manner.
