The General Secretariat of the Arab League (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Administration), in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Arab Institute for Human Rights, organized an event to launch the Arab Declaration on Belonging and Legal Identity at the headquarters of the Arab League. The event was attended by experts and representatives of mechanisms concerned with belonging and legal identity from Arab states and international organizations involved with these issues in the Arab region, as well as media professionals and specialists in the field.

Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector, Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, stated that the launch of the declaration is in implementation of the decision of the Council of Arab Ministers for Social Affairs in its ordinary session (42) to adopt the Arab Declaration on Belonging and Legal Identity as a guiding document for member states.

She added that the purpose of launching the declaration is to enhance the protection of children and women by raising awareness about the importance of belonging and legal identity and its connection to human rights and developmental goals, including progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The event also aimed to assess the situation and exchange knowledge by facilitating the exchange of best practices in the fields of belonging and legal identity.
