The Executive Director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, warned of the ongoing toll on children in the conflict-ridden Sudan.

According to the US-based Alhurra channel today, Thursday, Russell stated that “over 400 children have been killed or injured in the past seven weeks in El Fasher city,” highlighting that 9 million children suffer from acute food insecurity and nearly 4 million children under five suffer from severe malnutrition.

Last Tuesday, the UN Refugee Agency reported that the conflict in Sudan has forced over 600,000 people, mostly women and children, to flee to Chad, with no signs of this flow abating.

The agency called for urgent international support as the humanitarian crisis reaches a critical point, urging all parties to allow civilians wishing to move within and outside El Fasher to safer areas to do so.

It is noted that thousands have been killed or injured in El Fasher since the outbreak of fighting in the strategic city, the only one in Darfur where government troops still have a presence, after the Rapid Support Forces seized over 90% of the region’s areas.
