The Deputy Special Representative and Political Officer in Charge of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Stephanie Koury, will deliver her first briefing to the UN Security Council on June 19, according to Security Council Report.

In her briefing, Khouri will discuss the latest political, security, and humanitarian developments in Libya. The session will also include consultations on international sanctions imposed on Libya, with Japan’s representative, Yamazaki Kazuyuki, who chairs the Libya Sanctions Committee, providing an overview of the committee’s activities.

Key focus will be supporting the political momentum towards holding national elections to unify Libya’s divided governments remains a key issue for the Council. A significant goal is to help foster a common political ground between Libya’s competing legislative bodies to agree on electoral laws—a goal previously emphasized by former envoy Abdoulaye Bathily, who urged Council members to leverage their influence over Libyan stakeholders.

Broader geopolitical tensions continue to affect the Council’s dynamics concerning Libya. The United States and other Western members remain concerned about the reported increase in Russian presence in the eastern part of the country under Haftar’s control. Conversely, Russia accuses Western countries of seeking to exploit Libya’s oil reserves for economic gain.
