Munich Airport experienced a brief shutdown early Saturday after climate activists breached its grounds and glued themselves to one of its runways.

According to an airport spokesperson, one of the airport’s runways is now operational, but delays in flight schedules are expected.

The incident occurred during one of the busiest travel periods at the airport, which is located in southern Germany.

Members of the climate activist group “Last Generation” posted several messages on the social media platform X, showing group members on what appears to be a runway or tarmac holding protest banners.

One post mentioned that “six people are sitting in two groups at two different locations in Munich Airport.”

“Last Generation” is a climate activist group known for its direct action tactics aimed at drawing attention to the urgency of climate change.

The group has been involved in various high-profile protests across Germany and other parts of Europe, often targeting key infrastructure to highlight their demands for immediate and substantial climate action.

Munich Airport, one of Europe’s major aviation hubs, handles millions of passengers annually and is a critical component of Germany’s transportation network.

The timing of the protest, during a peak travel period, underscores the activists’ strategy to maximize disruption and media coverage to amplify their message.
