On Friday, Jordan’s security forces were involved in a deadly confrontation with drug smugglers along the Syrian border, resulting in two fatalities, as reported by the state news agency PETRA. The clash occurred during a crackdown on an attempt to smuggle “large quantities” of drugs into Jordan.
During the operation, other suspects sustained injuries and retreated back into Syrian territory. The security forces also confiscated several firearms during the engagement. This incident is part of a recent escalation in drug and weapon smuggling attempts into Jordan, prompting an increase in patrols and security measures along the border.
At the Arab League Summit in Manama on Thursday, King Abdullah of Jordan highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by armed militant groups involved in smuggling. He emphasized the need for regional vigilance and collective action to counteract these illegal activities, which he noted Jordan has been actively combating for years.
