Internet connections in East Africa were disrupted on Sunday due to damaged underwater cables, announced the organization NetBlocks, which monitors internet networks.

Tanzania and the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean were among the hardest-hit areas, according to the organization.

NetBlocks stated on its X platform that “this is attributed to faults affecting the SEACOM and EASSy marine cable systems that connect the region.”

According to Tanzania’s Minister of Information and Technology, the faults occurred in cables linking Mozambique to South Africa.

Mozambique, Malawi, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Uganda, Comoros, and Madagascar were affected to varying degrees, according to NetBlocks. Sierra Leone in West Africa also experienced disruptions.

Several countries in West Africa and its southern region experienced similar outages in mid-March due to cable damage.
