Twelve countries voted in favor of a resolution at the United Nations Security Council to grant Palestine full membership, while two countries abstained, according to reports from American media outlets. Despite the significant support, the resolution failed to pass due to a veto by the United States.

The U.S. State Department, prior to the vote, had announced that Washington would oppose the Security Council resolution recognizing a Palestinian state.

A statement issued by the State Department and broadcast on “Alhurra” channel highlighted the U.S. administration’s belief that pursuing statehood through the United Nations in New York is not the best pathway for advancing the cause of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

In related developments, the U.S. State Department reiterated its opposition to any forced displacement or eviction of Gaza residents.

The statement clarified that Washington would not endorse any Israeli plan that does not avoid such outcomes in Rafah, where over a million Palestinian refugees reside.

The humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain dire, and the statement urged Israel to intensify efforts to facilitate the entry of aid into the region.

This development underscores the complex dynamics at the United Nations concerning Palestine’s bid for statehood and highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Gaza amidst geopolitical tensions.
