Spain has sent 200 night vision devices to Morocco to assist in combating illegal migration and drug trafficking.
The delivery of this batch of devices, which falls within the framework of an agreement signed between the two countries in 2021, valued at 847,000 euros, aims to enhance security in border areas vulnerable to illegal migration flows.
This move comes following the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Rabat in February last year, where he met with King Mohammed VI to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, including security and migration.
The countries aim to strengthen cooperation in combating illegal migration, especially after the increase in the number of illegal migrants reaching Europe via Morocco.
The kingdom succeeded in preventing 75,184 individuals from illegal migration to Europe in 2023, an increase of six percent from the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Interior.
The ministry stated that last year saw six collective attempts to cross into Ceuta and Melilla involving more than 1,400 migrants, a decrease of 62 percent from 2022.
