Under the directives of the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the United Arab Emirates has inaugurated a comprehensive field hospital in Chad to support Sudanese refugees. The “Emirates Field Hospital” in Abéché, Chad, offers a range of medical services and care to Sudanese refugees who have fled to Chad, as reported by the Emirates News Agency “WAM”.
Inaugurated by Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, the hospital encompasses various departments including pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and internal medicine, among others. It features an operation room, emergency services, a laboratory, a pharmacy, radiology departments, 10 ICU beds, and 50 inpatient beds. Staffed by 22 doctors, 92 nurses, alongside medical and non-medical support teams, the hospital is operated by Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi.
The hospital’s establishment aligns with the UAE’s commitment to providing humanitarian and relief support to Sudanese brothers, aiming to alleviate the living burdens imposed by conflict situations and to meet their medical, humanitarian, and relief needs. This initiative is part of the UAE’s tradition of extending assistance in various circumstances.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan emphasized that the hospital’s opening is part of the UAE’s support for Sudanese affected by the conflict in Sudan since early April 2023, and it bolsters Chad’s efforts in responding to the humanitarian situation and alleviating the impact of the influx of Sudanese refugees into its territory.
He expressed gratitude towards the Republic of Chad for its cooperation in establishing the hospital, which also serves nearby areas. This initiative follows several UAE projects in recent months aimed at providing basic needs for Sudanese refugees in Chad and the host communities, including the establishment of another UAE field hospital in Am Timan, rehabilitation of schools, well drilling, food distribution, lighting of roads and markets, and opening a coordination office for aid in Chad.
The construction of this fully integrated field hospital in Abéché, costing over 20 million USD, meets the highest medical standards and is equipped with a complete medical team across all specializations, offering services around the clock with high professionalism. It includes dozens of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and technicians equipped with the latest medical devices and modern medicines, aiming to extend support and assistance to Sudanese brothers, reduce their suffering, and provide necessary medical services, especially to the most affected groups.
Over the past five years, the UAE has provided approximately 467 million USD in aid to the Republic of Chad, including about 100 million USD to support the refugees hosted by Chad.
