The Sudanese army has announced the arrest of fighters from Chad and South Sudan, who were allegedly part of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the city of Omdurman, west of the capital, Khartoum.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Sudanese army stated that “mercenaries” from Chad and South Sudan were apprehended at the headquarters of the Rapid Support Forces at the Radio and Television Corporation in Omdurman, without specifying their number.

The statement indicated that the armed individuals were “recruited and deceived by the Rapid Support Forces with financial promises,” highlighting that most of those detained were “minors who were lured into joining.”

The army affirmed their commitment to providing fair trials for these fighters in accordance with international law.

On March 12th last year, the Sudanese army announced the recapture of the headquarters of the Radio and Television Corporation in Omdurman from the Rapid Support Forces, who had been controlling the site since the outbreak of the war on April 15, 2023.

For almost a year now, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a conflict that has left approximately 13,900 dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
