The Minister of Interior Affairs of Libya’s Government of National Unity, Emad Al-Trabelsi, held discussions with Jan Vythical, Head of the European Union’s Technical Mission for Border Management (EUBAM), regarding the possibility of equipping and developing the Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia.
According to a statement released by Libya’s interior ministry on its Facebook page on Monday, the meeting addressed the discussion of training programs and qualifying the personnel of the Border Guard and all relevant ministry components.
Al-Trabelsi mentioned that the head of the Joint Security Chamber and his deputy would visit the Ras Jedir crossing to assess the damages and stay updated on the latest developments, expressing hope for the opening of the crossing before the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
During a press conference, he clarified that once the assessment is completed, the ministry will submit a report to the Prime Minister for the opening of the crossing by the Ministry of Interior Affairs and the relevant security agencies.
Al-Trabelsi emphasized the efforts to reopen the crossing while ensuring that no further violations occur against police and security personnel.
He explained that the crossing was attacked by smugglers on March 18, resulting in looting and destruction of several military vehicles.
The Ras Jedir crossing is considered the main land artery connecting Libya and Tunisia, through which all common trade and travelers pass.
The Ras Jedir border crossing between Libya and Tunisia has been a crucial point for trade and travel between the two countries. However, it has faced challenges due to security issues and attacks by smugglers.
The Libyan government is working with international partners, such as the European Union, to equip and develop the crossing, aiming to enhance security and facilitate smoother trade and travel operations.
