In a tragic incident highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Mexico, three police officers, including a regional police commander, were killed in an ambush on a highway in the violence-stricken western state of Michoacan.
According to the Michoacan state security agency, the attack occurred on Sunday night, claiming the lives of three members of the state Civil Guard.
Among the victims was Cristal García Hurtado, a respected regional police commander, whose tragic death has shocked the community. Local reports suggest that García Hurtado was brutally decapitated in the ambush.
The ambush took place along the highway linking the towns of Patzcuaro and Uruapan, areas that have witnessed heightened violence due to ongoing gang turf wars.
While investigations into the attack are underway, the Michoacan state prosecutor’s office has yet to provide further details or comments on the incident.
Michoacan, known for its volatile security situation, has been a battleground for rival cartels, notably the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the local gang, the Viagras, vying for control.
The escalation of violence has resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents, with organized crime resorting to tactics such as drone attacks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
This recent incident comes on the heels of heightened tensions in the region, with two mayoral candidates in the town of Maravatío being killed within hours of each other back in February.
