A spokesperson for the Nigerian army announced on Saturday that 16 soldiers were killed after being ambushed by a group of youths last week while attempting to quell clashes erupting in the oil-producing Delta State in the southern part of the country.
Brigadier General Tokur Jusau, in a statement, revealed that members of the 181 Marine Battalion were trying to gain control over a conflict that broke out in the Okoma area when they were killed on Thursday.
Jusau added, “The support team led by the battalion commander was also attacked,” resulting in his and three other officers’ deaths, along with 12 soldiers.
Jusau stated that the Minister of Defense has ordered an immediate investigation and the arrest of those involved.
He said, “So far, (authorities) have apprehended a few individuals, and necessary steps are being taken to uncover the motive behind the attack.”
Areas in Delta State witness frequent clashes, some of which turn violent, due to disputes over land or demands for compensation for oil spills caused by companies.
