China has called for direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, expressing its readiness to play a constructive role in bridging the gap and facilitating negotiations to end the conflict now entering its third year.
The Chinese envoy to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, highlighted China’s stance during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the conflict, advocating for involved parties to maintain calm, exercise restraint, and enhance direct communication and dialogue.
He emphasized the gradual building of consensus and the joint exploration of potential solutions to the crisis, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Zhang expressed China’s commitment to maintaining contact with all parties involved, fostering a consensus for a ceasefire, and ending the war.
He stressed the importance of laying the groundwork for dialogue and peace talks, making continuous efforts, and playing a constructive role in promoting a political settlement of the crisis.
He reiterated that conflicts and confrontations have no winners and that all disputes should ultimately be resolved through negotiation.
This statement comes in the wake of appeals from senior Ukrainian politicians and officials for support for Ukraine’s peace plan during a meeting with China’s special envoy Li Hui.
The peace proposal put forth by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory, aiming to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
