Nigerian security authorities are conducting a sweep of a vast forest in the northwest of the country in search of 287 students kidnapped from their school by gunmen, in one of the largest kidnapping operations in a decade.
France 24 English reported today, Saturday, that no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping yet, but local residents blame gangs that have repeatedly carried out mass killings and kidnappings for ransom in remote villages across Nigeria.
Gunmen stormed a school in the northwest region of Nigeria, and local residents say the gunmen surrounded the school at the time classes were scheduled to start before abducting hundreds of individuals.
This kidnapping is the second mass abduction to occur in Nigeria, a West African country, in less than a week, and authorities have stated that a rescue team has been deployed to find the kidnapped students, whose ages range from 8 to 15 years old.
This is not the first time schools in Nigeria have been targeted for ransom kidnappings. In 2014, the Boko Haram group kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in Borno State, and in 2021, gunmen abducted 150 children during a raid.
This comes at a time when the country is still battling armed groups that have been waging an insurgency in the northeast for over a decade, targeting security forces and civilians and causing the displacement of tens of thousands of people.
Nigeria is currently grappling with a severe kidnapping crisis that has seen thousands of people abducted across the country. Between July 2022 and June 2023, there were 582 kidnapping incidents resulting in 3,620 abductions. These incidents are often carried out by armed bandits who demand large ransoms and subject their victims to physical abuse. The abductions have created a climate of fear, exacerbated by the country’s security, economic, and unemployment challenges.
Efforts to curb the kidnapping menace include revising security strategies and prioritizing non-kinetic approaches for lasting peace. The Nigerian government has also passed laws criminalizing ransom payments to tackle the lucrative kidnapping industry. Despite these efforts, large-scale abductions and the targeting of schoolchildren continue to be a significant concern. The government is exploring various measures to engage the youth and discourage criminal activities, including generating new jobs, initiating a student loan scheme, and improving security around educational institutions.
