Armenia Considers Seeking EU Membership

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Armenia is contemplating an application for European Union membership, disclosed by Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, as part of its efforts to strengthen ties with Western nations amidst growing tensions with its traditional ally, Russia.

The minister’s statement came during an interview at the diplomatic forum in Antalya, Turkey, highlighting Armenia’s exploration of new opportunities, including EU integration.

Since Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s rise to power in 2018, Armenia has increasingly aligned with Europe and the USA, occasionally straining relations with Russia.

Yerevan maintains its alliance with Moscow does not extend to the conflict in Ukraine while accusing Russia of undermining its government and failing to protect Armenia against long-standing adversary Azerbaijan.

In February 2023, Armenian parliamentary speaker Alen Simonyan stated that Armenia would take action to best ensure its complete security when questioned about plans to strengthen relations with the EU.
