The United Nations Refugee Agency announced a 25% reduction in cash assistance for refugees outside camps in Jordan starting May, citing a “decline in support from donors.”
The agency expressed regret, stating, “Due to the decrease in support from donors, we regret to inform you that the agency is forced to reduce cash assistance for refugees.” While it will continue supporting the most vulnerable, fewer families will receive aid starting April.
Refugees can contact the agency’s helpline to verify eligibility for assistance starting April. The agency aims to support as many families as possible but will reduce cash assistance by 25% after Ramadan, effective May, excluding refugees in camps.
The agency noted the inability to appeal the reduction and highlighted funding from donors being lower than expected.
A UN report revealed a 27% unemployment rate among Syrian refugees in Jordan, with most burdened by debt amid reduced UN humanitarian aid and limited prospects of return.
Funding requirements for Jordan decreased by approximately 15 million dinars in 2024, with the UN considering scaling back interventions across the Middle East and North Africa.
