The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made a significant stride in supporting Yemen’s reconstruction efforts by inaugurating a pioneering solar power plant in Aden. This initiative represents the first and most substantial investment in clean and renewable energy within the country, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development in Yemen.

Announced by Ahmed Lamlas, Yemen’s Minister of State and Governor of Aden, the solar facility has started its phased operation, seamlessly integrating with Aden’s electrical grid. Located in the Bir Ahmad area, the plant covers an extensive area of 1.6 million square meters and is equipped with a comprehensive 9-kilometer transmission system for efficient energy distribution.

The project kicked off in December 2022, with dedicated efforts throughout 2023 aimed at completing the plant by 2024. The UAE has provided cutting-edge technology and expert teams to ensure the project’s success, reflecting their long-standing commitment to aiding Yemen.

Currently, the solar plant is operating at 20 to 30 percent of its full 120-megawatt capacity. Full operational capacity is anticipated by April, following the completion of a main transmission line to enhance connectivity.

Lamlas highlighted the significance of the solar plant in transforming Yemen’s energy landscape, reducing reliance on costly fuel-powered stations that have been a financial burden, costing over $100 million monthly.

The project, a collaboration between Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy and Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), aims to provide Aden with a sustainable power source, reducing operational costs and fuel dependency while promoting environmental conservation through reduced carbon emissions.

This solar plant not only serves as a beacon of development for southern Yemen but also exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to sharing its development model and clean energy priorities with the Yemeni people, in line with the humanitarian objectives of the UAE leadership.

By addressing the challenges of energy distribution and connectivity within Aden, the UAE’s clean energy initiative is set to alleviate the frequent power outages experienced by Yemenis, saving substantial funds previously allocated to diesel fuel and rented power stations. This move marks a significant step towards sustainable development and a brighter future for Yemen, underpinned by the UAE’s unwavering support.
