The Kuwaiti Cabinet, on Tuesday, sanctioned a decree to call voters to elect members of the National Assembly (Parliament) on Thursday, April 4th, as announced by the government spokesperson, Amer Al-Ajmi.

The state news agency, KUNA, reported that the Cabinet has forwarded the decree project to the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Earlier this month, the Emir of Kuwait issued a decree dissolving the National Assembly. The royal decree cited “exceedances of the constitutional constants by the National Assembly in showing due respect to the high status and deliberate use of unregulated offensive expressions” as the reason for the dissolution.

This forthcoming electoral process is seen as a significant step towards addressing the legislative challenges and ensuring respect for constitutional and democratic norms in Kuwait.

Kuwait’s political system is a unique blend of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, where the Emir of Kuwait holds substantial power, including the authority to dissolve the National Assembly.

The assembly, elected by the citizens, plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s legislation and overseeing the government’s work.

Recent tensions between the government and the assembly have led to political instability, prompting the Emir to dissolve the assembly to reset the political landscape.

This move aims to address legislative challenges and uphold constitutional and democratic values, with the upcoming elections representing a pivotal moment for Kuwait’s governance and political future.
