Netflix has announced to its subscribers that it will no longer accept payments through Apple’s in-app purchase system.
This means that Netflix customers who have been using Apple’s payment method will need to find alternative ways to pay for their subscriptions.
This move is consistent with Netflix’s earlier action in 2018, where it ceased allowing new subscriptions through iPhone and iPad apps.
The Streamable has reported that Netflix is advising its users to switch their payment methods as it moves away from Apple’s in-app purchases.
Although the company had previously permitted ongoing payments through Apple’s system, the company now appears to be intent on lessening its reliance on Apple to keep a larger share of its revenue.
The updated wording on Netflix’s support page for the US highlights the shift: “Some Apple-billed members in select countries may be prompted to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.”
Earlier this month, the security researcher, previously praised for assisting Apple in identifying software issues, exploited a significant security loophole to defraud the company of $2.5 million.
Noah Roskin Freizi, an employee at Zero Clicks Labs, utilized a flaw in Apple’s “Toolbox” system to orchestrate a major scam. Together with his accomplice Keith, they infiltrated Toolbox, a platform used by Apple to manage pending orders. Initially, they deceived another company that provides customer service for Apple before leveraging this access to penetrate Apple’s system.
Apple’s indictment against the security researcher alleges an attempt to obtain over $3 million through more than twenty fraudulent requests. From the completed requests, the defendants secured approximately $2.5 million in electronic gift cards and over $100,000 in products and services.
