The Palestinian scene is witnessing a political movement preceding the meetings of Palestinian factions and different political components at the end of this month in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is conducting a series of Arab consultations, the latest of which was his meeting with the Jordanian monarch, King Abdullah II, as he prepares to continue his tour in other Arab countries in the region.
The advisor to the Palestinian Prime Minister, Abdul Ilah Al-Atira, confirmed to the “Arab World News Agency” today (Sunday) that the government will submit its resignation to the President tomorrow after its weekly session.
Abbas, according to a source, insists on his candidate, Mohammad Mustafa, to form the new government, which should be a government of competencies. However, he leaves the matter to the consensus of the factions on his candidate.
According to the source, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh informed Abbas two weeks ago to prepare his government’s resignation “in the President’s pocket in case there are intentions to form a new government.”
However, the resignation has not yet been officially submitted.
Government of Experts
Informed sources revealed that President Abbas is preparing to form a new government in preparation for the day after the war on Gaza, with its priority being the security of Gaza and its reconstruction. The sources said that the new government would be a technocratic one, not a political government, and that the head of the Palestinian Investment Fund, Mohammad Mustafa, is the candidate of the Palestinian president to head it.
It is noted that the resignation of Shtayyeh’s government comes in anticipation of the Moscow dialogues, and a new government will not be assigned until after the conclusion of the dialogues scheduled for the end of this month.
The source justified the timing of the resignation with President Abbas’s desire to facilitate the dialogues scheduled in Moscow.
Shtayyeh announced last week that Russia had invited all Palestinian factions to meet in Moscow on February 26.
It is worth mentioning that Mustafa, born in Palestine in 1954, has held several high political and economic positions, and has worked in numerous Arab and international economic institutions. He has also led the launch and management of many investment funds and local and regional companies.
