Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called upon the international community to intensify efforts towards establishing an independent Palestinian state.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Wang Yi emphasized China’s support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state and stressed the need for a broader and more effective international peace conference to address the Palestinian issue, aiming for peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel.
Wang Yi also highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, firmly rejecting any calls for Taiwanese independence.
He stated, “To preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the notion of Taiwanese independence must be firmly rejected.”
The call comes amidst ongoing military operations by the Israeli army against Gaza since October 7th, initiated after the Palestinian movement Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood.”
This operation involved firing thousands of rockets into Israel and infiltrating Israeli settlements near Gaza, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of about 250 others.
The conflict saw a seven-day truce facilitated by Egyptian, Qatari, and American mediation, during which time prisoners including women and children were exchanged, and agreed-upon amounts of aid were delivered to the Gaza Strip.
However, military operations resumed on December 1st after the ceasefire ended.
In response, Israel officially declared war on Gaza, starting with devastating airstrikes followed by ground operations within the territory. These actions have resulted in approximately 28,000 deaths and over 67,000 injuries among the residents of Gaza, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
