Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi welcomed his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Cairo International Airport on Wednesday.

The official reception ceremony continued at the Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, marking Erdogan’s first visit to Egypt since 2012.

The two leaders are scheduled to engage in an Egyptian-Turkish summit, including an extensive session of talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations. According to Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy, discussions will also address various regional issues and challenges, with a primary emphasis on achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid to the region’s residents.

Erdogan’s visit occurs in the context of heightened Egyptian and Qatari efforts to de-escalate tensions in Gaza and pursue a new ceasefire and detainee swap agreement. Both Egypt and Turkey have been working towards normalizing relations after a decade-long rupture, marked by the reinstatement of their respective ambassadors last summer. The meeting between the two leaders signals a significant step towards enhancing diplomatic ties and addressing shared regional concerns.
