Emergency services announced on Tuesday that efforts are ongoing to extinguish a major fire that engulfed an amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden’s largest, on Monday.

One person remains missing following the fire that destroyed a large section of a new area designated for water activities.

After initially declaring control over the fire on Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the emergency services in Gothenburg told the public broadcaster “SVT” that the fire had reignited in the evening.

Emergency services reported earlier in the day that they were unable to make continuous progress due to the risk of the main building of the amusement park collapsing.

Per Nickvist, an official with the Gothenburg emergency services, said, “We’ve searched the sections we could access and which were deemed safe, and we didn’t find anyone.”

He explained that firefighters are still working to extinguish the fire and had to establish safe zones within the building in anticipation of potential collapse.

The fire may have originated from the section designated for water activities outside the main building, then spread “through the building.”

Local media footage of the fire on Monday morning showed explosive fireballs, flames, and several explosions destroying a water slide, while a cloud of black smoke rose above the city.

Emergency services confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the emission of smoke that could affect the neighborhood had ceased, noting that flames are still burning in parts of the building.

The police have launched an investigation for gross negligence and violation of labor laws.

The fire resulted in 16 people being treated without the need for hospitalization.
