German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is advocating for expanded assistance from the United States and Europe to aid Ukraine as he embarks on his visit to Washington.

He emphasized the need to send a resolute message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the West remains steadfast in supporting Kyiv.

Scheduled to meet with members of Congress later in the day and President Joe Biden on Friday, Scholz’s visit comes amid challenges in securing wartime aid for Ukraine in the Senate.

A bipartisan border package, linked to the funding, faced obstruction from Republicans, leading to uncertainty about supporting Kyiv.

While not directly addressing the Senate’s developments, Scholz, in a statement before his departure, highlighted the crucial issue of how both Europe and the United States can sustain their support for Ukraine.

He expressed concern that the aid pledged so far in Europe and decisions made by the American Congress fall short and called for collective efforts to do more.
