The Russia-Ukraine war, which has significantly escalated tensions in the region, began with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, followed by the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine’s eastern territories. The situation worsened when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which has been described as the largest war in Europe since World War II. This invasion was met with international condemnation and led to a series of sanctions against Russia, as well as substantial military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine from Western countries.
The roots of the conflict can be traced back to historical, political, and cultural disputes between the two countries. Prior to the invasion, there were significant military buildups by Russia near Ukraine’s borders, despite Russian officials denying any plans for aggression. The conflict has led to devastating impacts on civilians and infrastructure, with widespread reports of war crimes. Ukrainian forces have shown resilience and effectiveness, bolstered by international support and military aid, challenging Russia’s military might and undermining its global standing.
