The Tunisian National Guard announced today, Saturday, the arrest of nine terrorist elements in several different regions.

The National Guard stated in a communique today that these individuals were arrested on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization, noting that the accused have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to thirteen years.

The National Guard also mentioned that the necessary legal actions have been taken against them.

In a separate incident, Tunisian authorities announced the arrest of two members of a terrorism financing network. This network specialized in financing terrorist elements located in conflict zones and was headed by a foreign individual and his Tunisian spouse who reside abroad but received support within Tunisia from three associates. During the operation, various amounts of Tunisian and foreign currencies were seized, along with banking and postal documents proving cash transfers.

Several terrorist incidents have occurred in urban and rural areas of Tunisia. These include attacks targeting government personnel, especially members of the security forces, and have been claimed by groups pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. However, the connections to the global terrorist network are often limited, with operational skills of the cells being self-taught and prone to failure.

The United States Department of State’s report on Tunisia highlights the country’s ongoing efforts in counterterrorism and border security, emphasizing its priority given the high risk of terrorist activity. The report acknowledges Tunisia’s collaboration with the United States and other partners, contributing to the professionalization of its security forces and the implementation of proactive counterterrorism operations. Despite challenges, Tunisia has shown consistent security force readiness and improvements in crisis response, coordination, and investigation.

These efforts reflect Tunisia’s commitment to combating terrorism within its borders and the broader region, underlining the importance of international cooperation and comprehensive security strategies in addressing the threats posed by terrorism and extremism.
