Tunisian President Kais Saied has decided to extend the state of emergency throughout the country until the end of 2024.
In an official announcement published in the state gazette on Tuesday, the presidential decree stated: “The state of emergency in the entire Tunisian Republic is extended from January 31, 2024, until December 31, 2024.”
Previously, Saied had extended the state of emergency on January 31, 2023, until December 31 of the same year. Subsequently, it was extended until January 30, 2024.
The state of emergency was initially declared in late 2015 after a terrorist attack that involved the bombing of a presidential security bus in the capital, resulting in the death of 12 security personnel and the injury of 16 others, including both security personnel and civilians.
This measure grants exceptional powers to the security forces, including the authority to prohibit strikes and demonstrations and impose house arrest on individuals.
