A special flight transported the first 11 children from the Gaza Strip, who had suffered serious injuries from Israeli bombings, to Rome’s Ciampino military airport on Monday evening.
Staying in Gaza would have made on-site treatment extremely challenging, if not impossible.
These children crossed the border into Egypt and then boarded planes headed for Italy. Among them, there was also a young man just over 18 years old.
Upon arrival in Italy, they will receive treatment at some of the most prominent pediatric hospitals, including the Vatican-affiliated Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome, which will handle initial reception and triage.
Other hospitals involved in their care include Gaslini Hospital in Genoa, Rizzoli Hospital in Bologna, and Meyer Hospital in Florence.
Italy stands out as the first European country to initiate an international rescue mission for the victims of the Gaza conflict.
General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, speaking about a coordinated effort between various ministries, mentioned that in the coming days, the hospital ship ‘Vulcano’ will depart for Italy from the Egyptian coast, carrying around fifty accompanied minors.
It is expected to dock at a central port within 4-5 days, depending on the hospitalization needs of the children.
Furthermore, in February, an airlift operation will commence to transfer additional children who are currently receiving medical care in Cairo to various Italian hospitals.
Last night, the University of Perugia and San Marino’s hospitals also expressed their willingness to participate.
General Figliuolo emphasized their commitment to bringing as many children as possible to receive the necessary medical attention.
