Why Did Algeria Dismiss it’s Minister of Communication?

Late on Tuesday, the Algerian presidency announced, through its Facebook account, that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has dismissed Communication Minister Mohamed Boslimani without stating the reason.

This decision also includes the appointment of the ministry’s agent as the acting minister. The presidency pointed out that Boslimani’s dismissal occurred after consultation with the Prime Minister, as required by the constitution in matters related to the appointment and dismissal of government team members.

The dismissal of the Communication Minister came about an hour after the private “Al-Nahar” television broadcasted a news report claiming that the authorities had asked the UAE ambassador to leave the country “within 48 hours”. This action was allegedly due to the arrest of four Emirati nationals on suspicion of spying for the Israeli intelligence service. The channel, whose director is in jail on corruption charges, did not attribute this news to any source.

Following the dismissal of Minister Boslimani, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which its spokesperson categorically denied the news circulated on social media and some media outlets about the request for the Emirati ambassador to leave Algerian territory. The spokesperson stressed that “this news is false and unfounded, confirming that the ministry’s statements are the only source of information.”

The foreign ministry’s statement further clarified that Algerian-UAE relations are “strong and solid, with a mutual desire to elevate bilateral relations to the highest levels, in implementation of the common will of the leaders of both countries, President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his brother, President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.”
