In a significant legal development, Peter Navarro, former economic advisor and close ally of Donald Trump, was sentenced to four months in prison for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
This verdict follows a similar case in 2022 when another former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, was also sentenced to four months in prison for failing to cooperate with the congressional inquiry into the Capitol attack. Bannon’s sentence was temporarily suspended pending an appeal.
On the recent ruling, Judge Amit Mehta imposed both the four-month prison sentence and a fine on Peter Navarro, who has indicated his intention to appeal the decision.
Peter Navarro had been charged in September for failing to appear and provide documents to a House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021.
On that fateful day, hundreds of Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building, the seat of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, in an attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.
